Ore City was first called Murray League. It was settled by a group from Haywood County, Tennesse, around 1853. They started the Murray League Institute (school) and built a church. The Ore City Cemetery is on land where the school and church were located. The first marked grave was Maude Ferguson who died in 1857. Some of the original settlers buried in the cemetery are: William & Jane Clark, Charles C. & Mary Coppedge, and James H. & Martha Armstrong. Sadly, many headstones have been lost to time, leaving many unmarked graves. The historical marker that stands beside the cemetery reads as follows... Murray Institute A Community called Murray League, for the original land grantee, first school in Upshur County (1853-1861) founded by Tennesseans Rev. Joshua Clark and William L. Coppedge. County educational boarding school, famous for excellence. Taught engineering, higher mathematics, Greek, Latin, along with common subjects. Was closed during the Civil War. 1964 As hard as we all try, we are human and sometimes
when reading a cemetery we miss a grave covered with leaves, fireants,
or bushes. Sometimes the headstone has sunk and is mostly underground.
Our area also has many graves only marked with iron ore rocks and even
many unmarked graves. There are headstones that have long ago been destroyed
by the elements or even vandalizm, and are hard to impossible to read the details. We would appreciate it if you
would let us know if you did not find your relative which was buried
here, and would appreciate your letting us use the information you know
about them. With the combined efforts of us all, we can make the Upshur
County website bigger and better.
