PRINCE  CEMETERY





Take Hwy 155 N from Gilmer to Verbena, turn right (south) and go 1/2 mile. Apparently this cemetery is not being cared for.  It is not fenced, and trash has been dumped.  A gate was pushed off to the side, so maybe there was a fence at one time.  If anyone knows who is the caretaker of this cemetery, could you contact Etta and Elaine, maybe we can see what we can do to get some help out there to clean it up......or if it has been cleaned up, we would also like to know.

Read by Bill Starnes Oct 30, 1998 and submitted by the Upshur County Historical Commission.
NOTE: Pictures taken Oct 2007 by Etta Withers & Elaine Martin.  We only found 9 headstones and Funeral Home Markers.  We can only presume the ones we did not find no longer exist. 

As hard as we all try, we are human and sometimes when reading a cemetery we miss a grave covered with leaves, fireants, or bushes. Sometimes the headstone has sunk and is mostly underground. Our area also has many graves only marked with iron ore rocks and even many unmarked graves. There are headstones that have long ago been destroyed by the elements or even vandalizm, and are hard to impossible to read the details. We would appreciate it if you would let us know if you did not find your relative which was buried here, and would appreciate your letting us use the information you know about them. With the combined efforts of us all, we can make the Upshur County website bigger and better.
