UPDATE: Updated March 2017 by Bernard Haynes with photos.
Transcribed & completely photographed Apr 2009 by
Geraldine Little Braswell & Sandy Spann.
Read by Louis W. Clark and submitted by Upshur County
Historical Commission. It has been combined with the earlier partial
reading by Maribeth Buce and Barbara Weiss. This helps assure that no grave has
been overlooked.

Phillips Historical Marker
Our thanks to
Larry Coulter for the great pictures.
As hard as we all try, we are human and
sometimes when reading a cemetery we miss a grave covered with leaves,
fireants, or bushes. Sometimes the headstone has sunk and is mostly
underground. Our area also has many graves only marked with iron ore
rocks and even many unmarked graves. There are headstones that have long
ago been destroyed by the elements or even vandalizm, and are hard to
impossible to read the details. We would appreciate it if you would let
us know if you did not find your relative which was buried
here, and would appreciate your letting us
use the information you know about them. With the combined efforts of us
all, we can make the Upshur County website bigger and better.
There is a nice flag pole with the following plaque
attached:
In Memory Of:
J Clark Smith Sr
Sara Lucy Smith
Grady C Smith

David J Smith
Dedicated by: J C Smith Jr 1994
This cemetery has quite a few iron ore rocks for markers and numerous
unmarked graves.

but is family history. The grave was not marked because my great
grandfather G.W. Willingham had remarried in 1910 and though the
Fortsons lived with G.W.Willingham, the new wife did not want to pay to
