HOPEWELL CEMETERY

Our thanks go to the Upshur County Historical Commission for allowing us to use their reading of Hopewell Cemetery.  The reading was done by: Thurman Hearn, Thurman Cagle, Durward Amos, Finley Tucker, Garland Bullock, and Curtis Hart. It was completed June 1, 2000. Thanks also go to Lea Ann Tedford  for the use of her partial reading. We have merged the two to help insure no one was missed. There are many unmarked graves, and graves marked only with native rocks.

Update: Thanks to Billy L Thompson, Sue Kennington, and Fendley Tucker, Secretary/Treasurer of the Hopewell Cemetery, for the recent update.  This should make the listing current through May 24, 2009.
Update: Thanks to Sandra L Spann & Geraldine L Braswell for completely photographing the cemetery in April of 2008!

Thanks to Kim Wolff & Sondra Petty Nicholson for the use of their pictures.

Bell Emily Wade Aug 24, 1841 May 28, 1895 Note: Ronald Wade as placed a new headstone Dec. 2010.  Per Ronald Wade - old photographs are a "before and after" set with the photo at the top taken in the 1970's showing the broken headstone of Emily Adaline Wade Bell in Hopewell Cemetery located next to her husband, Joseph Henry Bell and highlighted so that it shows a dove and still readable name and dates. The photograph at the bottom taken in 2007 shows the same grave but the headstone is totally missing with only the base remaining.  Emily Adaline Wade born: 24 AUG 1841 in Alabama, the daughter of Joseph Berry Wade (1815-1877) and Sarah Medely Odell Wade (1822-1908) and died: 28 MAY 1895 in Rosewood, Upshur Co., Texas. She married Joseph Henry Bell (1819-1905), 22 years her senior, on 3 Feb 1862 in Auraria, Lumpkin Co., Georgia where she was brought up and attended schools and where her father was a gold miner in the area that experience the first gold rush in the United States in 1838. Bell was the best friend of her father and the families remained close throughout the decades and the Bells moved from Georgia to Upshur County in 1869 with the Wade family. Both families lived in Kaufman County, Texas for a time but returned to Upshur County. One of Henry's sons, Rev. Charles Walter Bell, married Emily's sister, Adelia Josephene Wade (1857-1936). When Emily married Mr. Bell the Civil War was raging and she lived the remainder of the war in the Calhoun Hotel in Auraria, Georgia which is in ruins now in the tiny ghost town of Auraria. The hotel was once owned by U. S. Vice President John C. Calhoun.
