PLEASANT GROVE CEMETERY

Pg 3

Thanks to Jane Eubanks for the use of her pictures!

Update:  Transcription & pictures courtesy of Geraldine Little Braswell & Sandy Spann, June 2008.

Many of the pioneer families who settled in this area and established the Lafayette community in the 1850s immigrated from the southern United States. The 1860 burial of one-year-old Thomas J. Harrison, son of Georgia immigrants Abram and Harriet Harrison, is the first recorded in the cemetery. Land for church and cemetery purposes was set aside by J. M. Brison in 1870. Iron ore, mined commercially here in the 1890s, was used to mark several grave sites of the area's earliest settlers. The cemetery is maintained by an association organized in 1973.

Per GG Granddaughter Caren Douglass -  James Chamberlin Lindsey born in Tenn. the son of Dudley Hawse Lindsey (1808 – 1859) and Charlotte Temple Puckett (1809 – 1877).  His parents Dudley Hawse Lindsey and Charlotte Puckett Lindsey moved from TN to TX as well. Unfortunately, Dudley Hawse Lindsey died unexpectedly on a visit home to TN and is buried there next to his mother and father. Charlotte Puckett Lindsey continued living in Upshur County, Texas and is buried there we think, grave location is unknown at this time. We are thinking she is one of the unmarked graves in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Her parents remained in TN. James Chamberlin Lindsey married first - Mary or Mae Lee. Their children were James Dudley "Dud" Lindsey borrn about 1871 and William N "Will" Lindsey born about 1873.... no other children were born to this union. Mary/Mae Lindsey died at an early age and James Chamberlin Lindsey remarried Sally Workman.  Their children included Cat Lindsey born about 1879, Robert Maynard Lindsey (1880 – 1963), Belle Lindsey born about 1883, Annie Lindsey born about 1886, Bessie Lindsey born about 1889, and Addie Lindsey born about 1890.  During the Civil War enlisted in Co. B 2nd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry (Walker's).
Dudley Hawse Lindsey died unexpectedly on a visit home to TN and is buried in the Lindsey Cemetery, Rutherford County, TN next to his mother and father, Caleb Lindsey and Temperance (House) Lindsey. Charlotte (Puckett) Lindsey continued living in Upshur County, where she died and is buried in an unknown grave location. The grave site for Mae/Mary (Lee) Lindsey is also unknown. Sallie (Workman) Lindsey is buried in Sulfur Springs Cemetery, Hopkins County with her daughters Addie Lou (Lindsey) Coke, Annye (Lindsey) Reynolds and Bessie Jane (Lindsey) Willis, and other Workman / Lindsey relatives. Joseph Lindsey (1834 – 1895) and Elizabeth Temperance (Lindsey) Pankhurst (1832-1900) are siblings of James Chamberlain J. Lindsey and are buried in Pleasant Grove Cemetery as well as grandchildren and other extended family members.
