SHADY GROVE CEMETERY
UPSHUR COUNTY, TEXAS

UPDATED:  March 2009 - Geraldine Little Braswell & Sandy Spann completely photographed & transcribed Shady Grove Cemetery.

As hard as we all try, we are human and sometimes when reading a cemetery we miss a grave covered with leaves, fireants, or bushes. Sometimes the headstone has sunk and is mostly underground. Our area also has many graves only marked with iron ore rocks and even many unmarked graves. There are headstones that have long ago been destroyed by the elements or even vandalizm, and are hard to impossible to read the details. We would appreciate it if you would let us know if you did not find your relative which was buried
here, and would appreciate your letting us use the information you know about them. With the combined efforts of us all, we can make the Upshur County website bigger and better.

Thanks to Nancy Adams & Tom Mitchell for sending in their pictures.

Will Proven 3/2/1857) and Elizabeth Parks (1783 Wilkes, NC? 1868 Jackson, Ga.).  He married to Nancy Hargrove (1820 ? 1852). Their children included Stephen Pleasant Hargrove (18 Oct 1837 Ga. ? 10 Jun 1862 Columbus, Miss. from action in Civil War, Capt. Slayton's Co. D, 37th Ala. Infantry--was in same company as his brother Henry)Stephen had married in 1859 to Nancy Jane Cadenhead (1838 Russell, Ala.-1919 Tallapoosa, Ala.). Other children of James P. Hargrove & Nancy included Hupert H. Hargrove, (born in Harris Co., Ga. During the Civil War he enlisted in Co. I, 64th Regiment, Georgia Infantry. He mustered out on 09 Apr 1865 at Appomattox Court House, VA. He died in Shady Grove, Upshur Co., Tx. 3 Sep 1879). Hupert took responsibility over the children when his parents died and they were living with him in Macon, Auburn Co., Alabama by 1860. Other children of James P. and Nancy Hargrove were Henry Preston Hargrove (born about 1841 a Civil War Veteran, served in Capt. Slayton's Co. D, 37th Ala. Infantry and was captured 15 Mar 1864 and a POW at Camp Douglas in Chicago until close of the war. He received Confederate Soldier Pension in 1908 from Van Zandt Co., Tx. He died 12 Jan 1925, New Hope, Dallas Co., Tx.), James M. Hargrove (1842-1909), William Hargrove born about 1844, Elizabeth Hargrove born about 1845, John Hargrove born about 1849, Mary Susan Hargrove  (1850 Macon Co., Ga.- 7 Mar 1927 Wills Point, Van Zandt Co., Tx. married 18 Nov 1865 in Columbus, Ga. to William Henry Cadenhead (1838 - 21 Apr 1904), a Civil War Veteran, Co. H, 1st Ala. Infantry, captured & in Yankee POW Camp Douglas in Chicago until the end of the war with his future brother-in-law, Henry P Hargrove). If anyone knows the location of his or his wife's burial please let me know. At the time of the 1860 Federal Census James and Nancy were living in Northern Division, Macon Co., Alabama next door to son, Hupert H. Hargrove who had his siblings living with him, Henry P. Hargrove, James M. Hargrove, William, Elizabeth, John and Susan. Hupert was shown as a School Teacher at the time. Living next door to them was another sibling, Stephen Pleasant Hargrove, his wife Nancy and their 6 month old infant. In 1870 James was living in Gadsden County, Fla. with daughter, Elizabeth Fanny Hargrove & a Mary West, born 1847 Florida, for which I can find no relationship as his daughter Mary was already married and living elsewhere and was born in Georgia and was "Mary Cadenhead" already. He must have died a short time after this census having moved to live with his sons in Upshur County, Texas.  During the Civil War he enlisted and served as a 1st Sergeant in Co. H, 7th Regiment, Georgia Infantry, C.S.A.
