In WWI, Clarence Edgar was commissiond to 2nd. Lt., Artillery. Serving In France, his horse stepped on a "bouncing Betty" type landmine. It exploded in mid air, killing the horse, and wounding Lt. Craddock. He was knocked unconscious and suffered burns and schrapnel wounds to his hands. He was then captured by enemy forces and was held as a prisoner of war for almost two years. In later years, Uncle Clarence would talk about how he was wounded during the war, but he would never talk about his experiences as a POW.
