Notes for Joseph Isaac Culbertson. Joseph left Missouri about the year 1860 travelling to Burnet County. He worked for his brother for a time on a sheep ranch, then purchased and owned and operated a cotton gin. He later moved to Concho county, Texas, and acquired and operated a horse ranch. He later sold the horse ranch and went back to Burnet County, farming there for several years before moving to Cottle County Texas about 1890, where he homesteaded and ran cattle. He left the farm with his family about 1893 and moved to Paducah, Texas, where he bought and operated the Culbertson Hotel. He also owned and operated two farms. Later, after selling the hotel, he moved to one of the farms and continued to operate them until after 1902. He then sold his farms near Paducah and moved to Moore County with his family where he purchased a ranch, which he operated for two or three years. He was killed in Dalhart, Texas, in November 1905, when the loft of a building fell on him.
Joseph Isaac Culbertson was a Mason. He was initiated as an entered apprentice July 27, 1874, passed through the Degree of Fellowcraft November 23, 1875, and raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason February 5, 1876. He was fifty-seven years, eight months and six days old at the time of his death on the 7th day of November. --Told to King Fike by W. O. Culbertson, Jan 1959.
