Ben C. Fox-Tax Collector

Ben C. Fox, our old, and newly elected, Tax Collector, was born in Carroll county, Miss., November 1st, 1844.

When a mere youth he joined the Confederate army and fought from the beginning to the end of that glorious but sad conflict. He is justly proud of the fact that he served under that vigilant fighter Gen. Braxton Bragg. During thirteen months of the war. Mr. Fox was confined to close imprisonment at Rock Island, Ill, and his old comrades of the gray, know what that means.

About the year 1870 he moved to Texas and for the past 21 years has been residing in Burnet county, where up to the time of his election to office, he was engaged in different avocations, chiefly that of clerking. In 1898, Mr. Fox was nominated by the populist party for Tax Collector of this county, and defeated a strong democratic opponent in the general election. In 1900 he again defeated the same excellent gentleman, the lamented J. D. Riley, who was held in high esteem by every one.

In the election just closed. Mr. Fox ran as an independent candidate, and it was the race of his life, having defeated his opponent, the democratic nominee by less than 40 votes. There is no disguising the fact that Mr. Fox is one of the most popular men in Burnet county, which is plainly demonstrated by the fact that in the two last elections he has been the only independent able to land. He has made a good collector and will serve the people faithfully.
