| Vigo Park, Swisher Co., Texas 3/4/1920 Col. J. A. Stevens Dear Sir: I have been much interested in your writeup of the old citizens of Burnet County. My father, J. L. Rountree, settled on Oatmeal Creek in 1852. I was 6 months old when he moved to Oatmeal. He bought 400 acres of land from Jack Holland, brother to Sam Holland for $400.00. I was probably the youngest immigrant to the County. George Holland was born soon afterwards, and his mother died when he was born. She was the first person buried in the Oatmeal graveyard. George W. Lamon moved to Oatmeal soon after my father settled there. Mr. Lamon was a well educated man, and for a time he taught the Oatmeal School. He was one of the best farmers in the County. He taught me how to stack wheat, and lay off straight rows. Judge Scott, the first County Judge of Burnet County, settled south of Oatmeal. Jim Hill settled at the head spring on Oatmeal. Mr. Beal was another early settler on this creek. Old Uncle Dave Taylor was another great citizen that settled just south of Burnet. Eld. Ephraim McDaniel settled on the Gabriel and near where Bertram is now. Col. Wilson Barton and his numerous sons were here in an early day. We could go on naming them ad infinitum. This country has made an immense crop of maize and Kaffir, and the last crops are now being threshed. The price is now $1.55 per hundred. The wheat crop is very promising. All kinds of grain has been planted, wheat, oats, barley, etc. Yours, F. S. Rountree |
