Lubbock County was created in 1876, and organized in 1891, from what were known as the territories of Bexar and Young. It was named after Thomas (or Thompson) Saltus Lubbock, a former Texas Ranger and brother of Francis Lubbock (previous governor of Texas.) Texas Tech was founded in Lubbock in 1923. SPGS began a collection of data for genealogists and by December of 1961 SPGS was given a bookcase in the Lubbock City Library... the collection has grown to include thousands of books and an extensive microfilm and compact disk collection."
