Sgt. Alvarez died Wednesday, February 20, 2008 in Baghdad, Iraq, after their vehicle was hit by a bomb.  Alvarez was an infantryman assigned to A Co., 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team. He entered the Army in March 2005 and arrived at Fort Campbell in August 2005.

Sgt. Gary Wayne Jeffries of Roscoe, Nolan Co., TX was killed Monday, January 28, 2008 in Mosul, Iraq.

BETTY BROWN

In 1977 President Jimmy Carter awarded the WASP full military status, and in 2010 Betty traveled to Washington, D.C., with 175 surviving WASP - and her entire family- to accept the Congressional Gold Medal for their service in WWII.

GILBERT MORGAN GEURIN

He was a lifetime airline pilot and instructor.  In 1942 he was a Civilian Air Force flight instructor at Avenger Field.

Tom trained recruits of the Women's Airforce Pilots (WASP).  Then, as a United Airlines pilot, Tom flew over 6000 hours.

In 2009, Ann was  awarded the Congressional Gold Medal. In 2014, at age 93, Ann was interviewed by the Mesa County Library for an oral history of her experience as a woman in the military during WW II.

She was born in Boston, MA and attended Emmanuel College in Boston where she learned to fly.  Rita served in WWII as a Women's Airforce Service Pilot.

WASP TEX MEACHEM

In March, 2010, when the WASP were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, in recognition of their service to the country, Tex was present for all of the ceremonies and events. A few weeks later she was given the opportunity to fly once again in an AT-6 Texan, which had been her favorite plane to fly as a WASP.   Obituary

She entered the Women's Flying Training Detachment at Avenger Field, Sweetwater, Texas in Class 43-W-5. She received Primary Instruction in the Fairchild PT19, Basic in the BT 13 and Advanced Training in the AT6 and Twin Engine in the UC78.       Obituary

 

 

WASP Instructor Dies

Nathan Alan Trager,  passed away June 29, 2012. "Nat" was a U.S. aviation icon and flight instructor of U.S. Army Air Corps WASPs, Avenger Field, Sweetwater, Texas, during World War II, and an airport operator after the war, business man and family man.

GERTRUDE MARCIA (WENZEL) MILNER

Beginning at the early age of 15, she would fly not just small planes, but also many large World War II bombers, including the B-26, B-29 and B-17 Flying Fortress. She was born and lived as a gifted, independent, extraordinary bird - a WASP (Women's Air Service Pilots). In recognition of her service during WWII, she was honored with the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010.  Obituary

MILLIE DALRYMPLE

Millie Dalrymple was born Feb. 14, 1920; died Nov. 14, 2012.  She was a member of the WASP in WWII, towing targets, transporting military people piloting B17 and B24 bombers.

Lois Maxine "Dobbin" Auchterlonie, 95. Lois was born April 14, 1917, on a farm, east of Viola, Kan. to parents Thomas M and Alma R. Dobbin; she passed away peacefully on March 24, 2013, following a fall at her home in Snohomish Wash.

1921-2013

 

Joined the WASP program in 1943 and sent to officers' training school at Avenger Field, Sweetwater, TX.  She then joined the Second Ferry Group stationed in Wilmington, Delaware.

1918 - 2013

 

Before joining the Air Force, Mr. Huett was a flight instructor-Commander at Sweetwater, Texas, where he instructed British Cadets, American Cadets and Women Pilots known as the WASPS.

MARY ALICE PUTNAM VANDEVENTER

1923-2014

During WWII at Avenger Field she interviewed and the 21 age restriction was waved.  She flew Stearman, AT6, PT19, UC-78 and C-45.

She took flying lessons at Danbury Airport in Connecticut and afterwards was invited to become a Women's Air Force Service Pilot (WASP) at Avenger Field, Sweetwater.

ALLISON BURNS McBRIDE

1920-2014

During WWII she worked at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. in intelligence.  She obtained her pilot's license and joined the Army Air Corps Women's Air Service Pilots.  She was based in Sweetwater, TX and ferried military bombers.  Link to: Obituary

ELOISE WISHMEYER

1956-2014

She supported her favorite organization, the National WASP Army Service Pilots Museum at Sweetwater, TX.  There are not many of these WASP women left and they are working hard to finish the museum.

Jerry Horn was a WWII veteran, in 1943, she volunteered for the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) and trained as a pilot in Sweetwater, TX.  Obituary>>>

She joined the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots) in 1944; the program was disbanded before she could serve in active duty.  Along with other members of the program, she was granted full military status in 1977.  Obituary>>>
