(Marble Falls Messenger, 10 Feb 1944)

The war came closer to Marble Falls last Thursday night when Mr. and Mrs. S. A Green received word from the Navy Department that their son, Ensign Worth S. Green was missing in a plane crash. The wire was received about 9 p.m. and was telephoned from Western Union, Austin to Fred Worcester, deputy sheriff here, who delivered the message.

Ensign Green finished his pilots training last fall and was shipped out in early December after a two week visit here with home folks. He went first to Pearl Harbor and then to Hilo, Hawaii, for duty. Later he was sent to a smaller island and put on patrol duty. And, at the time of the tragic telegram, relatives do not know whether he had been transferred to another base or was still flying patrol duty.

The following telegram, dated Feb. 3, 1944, was received:

Mr. And Mrs. Sidney A. Green
Marble Falls, Texas

The Navy Department regrets to inform you that your son, Ensign Worth Stuart Green, U.S.N.R., is missing in plane crash while in the performance of his duty and in the service of his country. The Department appreciates your great anxiety but details not now available and delay in receipt thereof must necessarily be expected. To prevent possible aid to our enemies, please do not divulge the name of his ship or station. Rear Admiral Randall Jacobs

In May 1944 his parents were notified that Ensign Green had been declared lost at sea as of 18 Jan 1844, as a result of a plane crash near one of the islands of the Elilee Group.
