DANFORTH, Susie

Newspaper clipping, with pictures, from The Highlander, 13 March 1975, entitled "Miss Susie to Celebrate 100th Birthday with America's Bicentennial".

Summary of the article: She was born 9 May 1876 on a large ranch near Wimberly. She rode horseback to San Marcos for her education, returning home on weekends. It took about three hours to ride the 15 miles. Miss Susie's father was Allen Turner Brook, and her mother was Helena Luco, a great grand-daughter of the Emperor of Prussia. She was a schoolteacher, teaching at Wimberly, Dripping Springs and other counties. One of her teaching jobs paid $29 per month. She married William Caleb Danforth, raised three daughters, Bess Halm; Vivian Newcombe, and Lillian. Her husband died in 1938. Many more paragraphs recounting her spirit, energy, and many accomplishments.

DAVIS, James W.

(1) handwritten narrative of Davis family dated 6 Feb 1961, author unknown. Big Spring Texas, Feb 6-61.

My father, A.E. Davis was born in Miss-1851. He married Jennie Cannon. They were married in Holly Springs Miss--They had 6 children, 4 girls, 2 boys. We moved to Texas in 1879, near Florence, Texas. We lived on the D.D. Thompson farm and later bought land from the Briggs Estates 4 miles south of Briggs Texas. We children grew up there; went to school at Prairie Lee school. We had a 6 month school, one teacher with an assistant teacher 3 months each year. We had the long benches to sit on and our noon lunch was carried in tin buckets. We attended the gathering at Gum Springs school.

I, (Ernest) Davis married Essie Nichols in 1905. We went to West Texas to make our home. We raised 3 boys: Vance, Ralph and Lawrence. We have lived in the vicinity of Big Spring since 1911, have been in the ranching ever since. (two more handwritten pages)

DeSPAIN, George Washington

Despain family history, beginning with George Washington DeSpain, born in 1877 in Burnet County, died in 1934; married Ada Pafford DeSpain, who was born in Tennessee in 1865 and died in 1945. Their son, Oliver Ratliff DeSpain was born 1902 in Burnet County, and died in 1962 in Austin. He married Zula Edna Wilkes in 1923. Her parents were Henry William Wilkes (b. 1879 in Bertram, d. 1944) and Mary Lena Boultinghouse, b. 1888 in Smithwick, d. 1952. More info on Wilkes and Boultinghouse lineage.

DUNCAN, et al

Two and a half page, typed doublespaced article about Jamie Lois Duncan, entitled "Resolution of Remembrance", dated 8 May 1990, and signed by Chairman of the Burnet County Historical Commission and President of the Burnet County Heritage Society. It is a recollection of her life and achievements, especially as they related to her work with the Burnet County Historical Commission.

DUNCAN, Green Cameron

About three paragraphs typed biography of Green Cameron Duncan, submitted by Jimsey Duncan Husted.

Green Cameron Duncan (1841-1910) G.C. Duncan, also a Confederate Veteran, was born in Kentucky in 1841. In July of 1888, he and his pardner George Northington, both of Wharton Co. purchased from D.H. Long a part of the present Duncan ranch west of Burnet. His life is included in the Wharton Co. History, and will not be repeated here, although he spent a great deal of his time in Burnet county.

His eldest son, Harris Bowie Duncan, graduated from Bingham Military Academy in Durham, N.C., and attended the University of Texas. Harris was placed in charge of the Burnet Co. holdings at about the time the Dalton Ranch, better known as Deleware, was purchased. In pardnership with his brother, Vance, he operated the ranch until his death in 1937. their brand, D-Cross was adapted from the original Duncal & Northington D-N.

President of the First State Bank for many years, Harris Duncan was known as an honorable and progressive citizen. John A. Lomax described him as a man "with all the virtues of the old-time Cattleman, and none of the vices of the new." He was a long-time member of the Executive Committee of the Texas Cattleman's Association.

DUNHAM, William Hickman

Full page newspaper article by Frank C. Rigler, writing in the 4 Jan 1973 issue of the Highlander. William Hickman Dunman of Llano County was a Texas Ranger and the article is filled with his stories written in letters to his niece, Alice R. Haynes. The article also gives Dunman family information, and includes pictures of Dunman and his niece, as well as great, great nephew who is his namesake.

(1) Application and supporting information for Official Texas Historical Marker for the Otto Ebeling House located at 601 Ave F, 2 blocks east of US 281 in Marble Falls.
(2) undated newspaper clipping from The Shamrock Texan about Robert L. Ebeling, Seaman 2C, USNR, of 407 N. Houston Street, Shamrock, being a member of the crew of the submarine USS Flasher. The article appears to be from the WWII era as it talks about war patrols against the Japanese. Most of the article is about the Flasher submarine and its role in the war. Nothing more is mentioned about Ebeling after the introductory paragraph.
